firstly, people of different ages have different ways of life. the old people like a quiet, peaceful and regular life whereas the young prefer noises, activities and unrestrained enjoyment. if they live together, old may feel that they are always disturbed and the young may feel that they are often handicapped.

secondly, people of different generations have different views and values. what is quite normal to the parents may seem to be old-fashioned or wrong to the children. when they live together, they may disagree on matters ranging from minor domestic matters to national and international issues. consequently, family life may be unpleasant or even unbearable to both the old and the young.

last but not the least, adult children, like their parents, love independence and freedom, but their parents still take them as children and unintentionally interfere in their affairs. the situation will be worse if the adult children are already married. in this case, the children have already built a new and closed world and any outside interference may lead to conflicts.

from what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that if the parents and their adult children do not live together, both the old and the young can enjoy complete independence and freedom, live a life they like, and keep intact their affections for each other.

there has been a worrying trend that children watch an excessive amount of television and do not engage much in active or creative activities. this trend can be ascribed to a number of reasons and it must be addressed by definite actions.

reasons for the trend vary. the primary reason is that children’s television programmes are being broadcast all day with addictive contents, such as vivid and colourful animations. cartoon network and disney channel with their all-day-long series of animation shows are an evident example of this. another clear reason is that parents nowadays are busy with their work, so they want children to focus on an activity that does not require much of their attention such as watching television. these two reasons make children spend more time in front of the television screen; this sedentary lifestyle prevents them from participating in active or creative activities.

a number of

excessive (a): if you describe the amount or level of something as excessive, you disapprove of it because it is more or higher than is necessary or reasonable. example: the government says that local authority spending is excessive.

additive (a): something that is addictive is so enjoyable that it makes you want to do it or have it a lot. example: video movie-making can quickly become addictive.

sedentary (a): someone who has a sedentary lifestyle or job sits down a lot of the time and does not take much exercise. example: obesity and a sedentary lifestyle has been linked with an increased risk of heart disease.

activate (v): if a device or process is activated, something causes it to start working. example: video cameras with night vision can be activated by movement.

parental (a): parental is used to describe something that relates to parents in general, or to one or both of the parents of a particular child. example: medical treatment was sometimes given to children without parental consent.

to appeal to (v): if something appeals to you, you find it attractive or interesting. example: on the other hand, the idea appealed to him.

remedy (n): a remedy is a successful way of dealing with a problem. example: the remedy lies in the hands of the government.

describe an interesting tourist attraction

you should say

where it is

what you can do there

and explain why you think it is interesting

ok then, well the tourist attraction that i’d like to talk to you about is west lake, which is here in hangzhou. and i apologize if you’ve already heard a lot of other candidates talk about it, but out of all the tourist attractions i know, west lake is the one i’m most familiar with, and i really do think it lives up to its reputation as being one of the most beautiful lakes in china.

but anyway, as for where it is, well as i mentioned just now, it’s here in hangzhou, but to be more specific, it’s actually right in the heart of the city, so um… yeah, it’s very accessible, and also very easy to find. for example, it’s only, like, a five-minute taxi ride from the train station, and you can also get the subway there.

and um… regarding what you can do there, well, a good way to take in all the scenery is to just wander around the lake. and there are also quite a few teahouses dotted around the lake, some more expensive than others, i might add, so if you do go to one, it’s a good idea to take a quick look at the prices before you sit down and make yourself comfortable, otherwise you might be in for a bit of a shock!

what else? um..…. oh yeah, of course, you can go on a boat on the lake, and if it’s your first time there, then it’s something you should definitely do, because i’d say it’s probably the best way to experience the beauty of the lake and its surroundings.

so yeah, it’s a really interesting place to visit, and if you haven’t been there yet, you should definitely go if you ever have the chance!

describe an experience when you spent time with a child.

you should say:

what you did

when and you did

and explain how you felt

one of my best friends has a 3-year-old baby girl; so every time we went out, she would take her with us.

her little girl is such a witty kid, and she is always full of energy. as she begins to be aware of the outside world, she asks a lot of questions just to satisfy her curiosity.

it happened one day when we went out shopping. while her mother and i took turns trying clothes on, she was sitting quietly on the bench. then she looked at me and her mother and started to express her opinions on our clothes.

the way she talked was so funny that we couldnt stop laughing. she was so used to playing with her barbie doll that she suggested we should dress like one of her dolls.

she even taught us how to walk like models because she thought that was pretty.

all the customers who walked in the store noticed her, even the store owner couldnt stop laughing at her since she was still a baby girl, but she talked and acted like a grown-up.

that was probably the best part of the shopping trip that i will never forget.

successful sports professionals can earn a great deal more money than people in other important professions. some people think this is fully justified while others think it is unfair. discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

as a result of content media attention, sports professionals in my country have become stars and celebrities, and those at the top are paid huge salaries. just like movie stars, they live extravagant lifestyles with huge houses and cars.

many people find their rewards unfair, especially when comparing these super salaries with those of top surgeons or research scientists, or even leading politicians who have the responsibility of governing the country. however, sports salaries are not determined by considering the contribution to society a person makes, or the level of responsibility he or she holds. instead, they reflect the public popularity of sport in general and the level of public support that successful stars can generate. so the notion of "fairness" is not the issue.

those who feel that sports stars are justified might argue that the number of professionals with real talent are very few, and the money is a recognition of the skills and dedication a person needs to be successful. competition is constant and a player is tested every time they perform in their relatively short career. the pressure from the the media is intense and there is little privacy out the the spotlight. so all of these factors may justify the huge earnings.

personally, i think that the amount of money such sports stars is more justified than the huge earnings of movie stars, but at the same time, it indicates that our society places more value on sport than on more essential professional and achievements.
